The SMS alert market is getting a bit crowded; if you want to sign up for these at all, choose carefully, or your phone will be ringing all day (and running up your text bill in the process).
Having said that, SMS/text publishing and advertising company 4INFO launched a free service Monday that delivers Major League Baseball scores and player alerts to your cellphone. This includes “event-triggered text alerts assembling pitching and offensive statistics for teams and individual players, including hits, runs, RBIs and roster and injury status,” according to 4INFO.
Sign up by texting a player’s name and the word “alert” to 4INFO, or shortcode 44636. (Example: “Derek Jeter alert”). For live scores, do the same thing with the team name instead of the player name (e.g. “Yankees 44636″). They also have other services available for basketball, golf, hockey, football, and more; check out http://www.4info.net/alerts/add/stats to get started.
