Social TV app and entertainment network GetGlue is eyeing the original online video content arena and, according to GigaOM’s Janko Roettgers on paidContent.org, has begun working on a partnership with Hulu that will involve promotional elements, as well as the indexing of Hulu’s entire original content library.
GetGlue CEO Alex Iskold told Roettgers, “We are not about linear TV. We are about what to watch.” More and more, viewers are discovering “what to watch” outside of the traditional constraints of television. Streaming original web content has become just as much a part of entertainment, for many of us, as tuning in to our favorite network television shows.
Roettgers writes that, “There is going to be some promotional element that will give GetGlue users the ability to earn a month-long free trial of Hulu Plus, but more interesting is that GetGlue is committed to index all of Hulu’s original content, including shows like Battleground and the Awesomes.”
This announcement comes on the tails of the release of House of Cards—the political drama series starring Kevin Spacey that was developed for Netflix. All thirteen episodes of the first season were released in one go last week in a move that many saw as a threat to linear TV and a sign as a new stage in the evolution of entertainment.
What, exactly, House of Cards and Netflix’s release strategy means for the future of streaming media and television has yet to be revealed, but it’s certain that original web content is on its way to becoming just as mainstream and desirable to viewers as television programming. GetGlue seems to be capitalizing on this trend with their partnership with Hulu.
This won’t be the first time that GetGlue and Hulu have partnered up. Just last month the companies teamed up around Super Bowl XLVII, bringing Hulu AdZone content to GetGlue users and allowing GetGlue users to check-in to Super Bowl commercials.
Today GetGlue also released the latest update to its iPhone app, including a new programming guide, the ability to chat with Facebook friends about shows, and show feeds.
