‘Girl Meets World’ Meets World Via Twitter, Tumblr

TVA long-rumored spinoff of the 1990s ABC sitcom Boy Meets World will indeed hit the airwaves, according to Twitter and Tumblr announcements from the actors involved. The daughter of the original boy — Cory Matthews, played by Ben Savage — and Topanga Lawrence, played by Danielle Fishel, gives the new series its name.

Savage announced the show would happen on Twitter.

Fishel took to Tumblr to reach out to fans, thanking them for their enthusiasm about the spinoff.

“When the news leaked that GMW was in the making, … [creator] Michael Jacobs and I had a conversation and we talked about how we were both so blown away by the reactions from all of you. We felt honored. We felt nostalgic. We felt touched by the excitement in your comments, tweets, Tumblr, and Facebook posts,” Fishel wrote.

The said of the Twitter chatter about the show that she read all the tweets “every day. It killed me not to be able to talk about it!).”

Fishel also asked fans for patience, fearing some would be so loyal to the original Boy Meets World that they wouldn’t give the new series a change.

“GMW is a new show.  It isn’t BMW brought back to life but in current day.  It will have familiar faces, familiar themes, and familiar messages.  It will also have new faces, new themes, and new messages. … For those of you who knew and loved BMW, please allow this show to evolve as well.  Stick with us. Give us a chance,” Fishel wrote.

Fishel’s Tumblr is untitled. It will be interesting to see if she continues to write about the project of if she simply used Tumblr as a way to self-publish a single letter to fans. (The post closes with “Love, Danielle.”)
