Google Docs mobile Finally Gets Mobile Editing: Baby Steps, Baby Steps

I’ve been waiting for the ability to edit Google Docs documents (text and spreadsheets) for a couple of years now. The appearance of the iPad in April and the inability to edit text documents and limited ability to edit spreadsheets has been a bit frustrating for a relatively heavy user of the service. Google finally enabled editing (of sorts) in mobile browsers yesterday.

Editing your Google Docs on the go

Both my screenshot (to the left) and Google’s own demo (below) are a bit misleading. The bold and other formatting you see in both examples cannot be made in the mobile browser. They do, however, survive round-tripping between Google Docs in a full browser and in a mobile browser. There are no formatting commands in the mobile browser edit window.

But, don’t let my personal minor grumpiness detract from Google’s good news. This is definitely a step in the right direction. More are sure to come. Baby steps, baby steps first.
