google, amazon, deliveryDing, dong! It’s the Google lady — or lad.

Google is testing a same-day delivery service for items bought from participating retailers, the company announced today.

The move is Google’s response to the popularity of Amazon Prime.

The program will initially be limited to the San Francisco Bay Area. To apply, an order must come entirely from a single participating retailer. The retailers include the retail giants Staples, Office Depot, Toys R Us, Target, Walgreens and American Eagle Outfitters. They also feature local businesses Blue Bottle Coffee and Raley’s Foods, both in San Francisco, and Palo Alto Sport Shop and Toy World.

“So hopefully, no more trips across town for simple errands,” wrote Tom Fallows, a product management director.

Initially, the service is free. Google plans to expand the service after the local beta test.
