Google Planning To Erect A Social Gaming Division

Google is planning to erect an entire Social Gaming division at the Googleplex, according to information gleaned from a recent job posting on Google’s website. The job listing, which was spotted by TechRadar is for the position of Project Manager, Games at Mountain View, California.

One can easily assume that once a project manager is hired, he would be tasked to erect the entire division and hire other personnel (such as game designers, graphics experts, developers etc) required to have a functioning gaming division.

The role and responsibilities of the Manager, Games at Google would be:

Rare opportunity to grow a brand-new business – Games at Google! We are looking for a strategic, technical and game-loving Product Manager to drive Google’s gaming strategy. You will design strategies for game distribution and discovery, player identity, game mechanics, and more. In addition to designing a great user experience and building out key partnerships, you will be significantly influencing Google’s social platform as you work directly with a critical set of early adopters, game developers. Interesting and impactful decisions involving social gaming, privacy, virality, business, and technical APIs await you and the strong, passionate team of gamers you will work with.

Responsibilites

  • Drive feature requirements for Google’’s gaming platform
  • Work with business development and developer relations to drive gaming partnerships/ content deals
  • Initiate and prioritize projects within engineering, assist in determining the best technical implementation methods, track product development, and develop product launch plans.
  • Establish partnerships internally and externally to drive the growth of games

Google’s outgoing CEO, Eric Schmidt wholeheartedly accepted that Google failed miserably at Social – which in turn is something that the incumbent CEO Larry Page would want to rectify.

Social Gaming could be termed as one feature that was responsible for the explosive growth of Facebook. Social Games made it big on Facebook in 2009 and by the end of 2009, the total time spent by an average user on Facebook increased by an astounding 82% as compared to the previous year. This meteoric rise in usage growth was  mainly a function of games like Mafia Wars and FarmVille.

It seems that Larry Page has finally got the memo that if Google wants to make it big in Social Media, it would have to make it big in Social Games.
