We need a scorecard to keep up with the various Voice over IP (VoIP) battles. There’s Google (Voice) vs. Apple vs AT&T. AT&T says they are not to blame. And, Apple says they haven’t actually rejected Google Voice for iPhone. Of course, Apple also hasn’t released it for download, so…
And, then there’s this…
…Google vs. T-Mobile vs. Skype. The item above from the Google Public Policy Blog refutes a USA Today report that says that Android smartphone users can’t use Skype. T-Mobile (carrier of the only Android phones currently available through a carrier in the U.S.) says they are not restricting VoIP use.
Google’s response is that Android 1.0 did not fully support VoIP but that these limitations no longer exist. Google also says that no VoIP app developer has yet provided a complete VoIP app. The question, I think, is why haven’t VoIP developers provided a “complete VoIP app” yet? Too difficult? Too small of a potential user-base? Something else?
