Viral Videos Prove That GoPro Is The Preferred Camera Of The Animal Kingdom

A new video of a seagull stealing a GoPro camera in Cannes, France has taken the web by storm this week, raking in nearly 1 million views in a few short days.  While it has not yet been confirmed as to whether this is a hoax—a viral campaign for GoPro—we can certainly confirm that GoPro is the camera of choice for animals the world over.  The kleptomaniac seagull in this week’s viral video isn’t the first to take a liking to a GoPro camera.  Just a little over a month ago, a lioness went to town with GoPro gear as well.

Let’s take a look at this week’s viral sensation first.  ‘Seagull stole GoPro’ was uploaded to the channel of YouTuber opica1983 one week ago, with the description, “Seagull stole my video camera in Cannes France.  I found it on the castle wall, where I had to climb.”  In the video, the camera is placed on the ground and sure enough a seagull comes along and flies off with it!  If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the video below.

Of course, this video reeks of viral hoax. I mean, why was the guy setting his camera down on the ground anyway and what are the odds that a seagull would fly off with a camera?  And how did he carry it?  And how did he make that hilarious honking sound when the camera was still in his mouth?  And, of course, how did the guy manage to actually find his camera in the end (it looks like the seagull flew pretty far with it)?  That being said, it still is pretty entertaining—whether it’s real (doubtful), was created with CGI, or involved some serious training and an awesome seagull.

But what’s even more entertaining is that this seagull isn’t the only animal to become infatuated with a GoPro camera.  Back in May of this year, another video called ‘Lions pinch camera’ racked up nearly 375,000 views.  According to titles in the video, a camera was placed on the fence line at the Tswalu Kalahari Game Reserve to film lionesses for photographs for a book on lions.  One of the lionesses took a liking to the camera, walking right up to it, picking it up and taking it for a spin.  Looks like this lion needs a few lessons in video framing…

I’ll be curious to see if we’ll see any other animal-related GoPro videos hit YouTube within the coming months.  After all, GoPro does seem to be the perfect tool for animals with a flair for videography.  What do you think about the seagull and lioness GoPro viral videos?  What animal would you like to see try out the GoPro next?
