Groupon today launched updates to its iOS and Android mobile apps that put local search front and center.
“Search is a critical part of Groupon’s product strategy. Most Groupon merchants now make their deals available on an ongoing basis, and search allows customers to find only the deals most relevant to them in this expanded marketplace,” the company said in a press release.
The updated apps include a magnifying glass icon that allows customers to search from anywhere in the app. The Android update also offers a layout optimized for 10-inch tablets.
Unlike most digital properties, Groupon brings in more traffic from mobile devices than from desktop Web interfaces, according to comScore.
The company’s emphasis on local search suggests that in the wake of Andrew Mason’s ouster as CEO, it may be shifting focus. Under Mason, the company had worked to improve its Goods business, which sells products at discount prices.
The local search space is growing increasingly crowded as Foursquare also horns in on Yelp and Google.
