According to CNN Money, Groupon will be one of the companies advertising during this Sunday’s Super Bowl. The commercial spots are reportedly going for nearly $3 million, but of course any company that can afford to turn down a Google takeover can afford it. A Groupon spokesperson would not provide CNN with any additional details about the pricing or time slot, so now all that’s left is for us to speculate about what the commercial will look like and to wait for it to air at some point during Sunday’s game.

Adweek’s AdFreak noted that yesterday Groupon uploaded a spoof Super Bowl commercial that they made in early 2009, just after the company launched (my, they’ve grown a lot in two years!). The video description provides a little history about this low-budget “mind blowing” clip:

“While watching the 2009 Super Bowl after we’d just launched Groupon, a few of us noticed how dumb most the ads were – seemingly all of them had some sort of slapstick violence…one after another, they began to appear increasingly absurd, especially because none of the people affected by the slapstick violence were hit with the actual painful consequences of real violence. Some driver would get distracted by a Slim Jim or a lady wearing Revlon and he’d crash his car, which would explode…after which the only consequence would be that he’d have ash all over his face, frayed hair, and a less than funny stunned look.

“In response, we commissioned a super low budget commercial with the same premise of senseless violence, but this time with it’s shockingly realistic aftermath that violence tends to have. It is a lesson in anti-violence, and an fossil of Groupon in the earliest phase of its horrifying evolution.”

I thought that Groupon’s 2009 ad was pretty hilarious, though it may have been on the banned list if they’d tried to actually get it on during the big game. So I can’t wait to see what they’ll be rolling out at the Super Bowl. If you’ll be watching the Super Bowl this weekend (and who won’t?!) be sure to keep an eye out for the Groupon commercial!
