Hachette eBook Sales Up, Revenues Down in 2012

Hachette’s net revenue in 2012 decreased 3.4 percent as compared to 2011.

The company’s sales volume was up 1.2 percent up during the year, but consumers have been buying more digital books and eBook sales generate less revenue. The company also reported that they had 71 titles on the New York Times eBook bestseller list in 2012, six of which hit the No. 1 position.

Lagardère, Hachette’s parent reported revenues at approximately $9.6 billion in 2012, down 0.2 percent from 2011. The company released preliminary 2012 results last month alongside 2012 fourth quarter results. These new figures are more detailed.

Hachette Livre, the Lagardère division that Hachette is a part of, saw eBook sales increase last year as well. Check it out: “Ebook sales grew in 2012 in the US and UK, with full year ebook sales accounting for 23% of Adult Trade in both markets. In 2012, ebooks accounted for 8% of Lagardère Publishing’s total net sales, compared to 6% in 2011. In France, ebooks still make up less than 2% of sales.”
