How to Use Facebook to Rock Your Vote

It’s Election Day in the good ol’ U.S. of A. And if you didn’t know that already, you must not have logged onto Facebook yet today.

The social networking giant has transformed itself into election central this November 2nd with a massive, get-out-the-vote operation to remind its tens of millions of users where, when and how to vote.

The political fun begins from the moment you log on with a message at the top of your News Feed reminding you it is Election Day and to go vote.

Forgotten where your local precinct is? There’s an app for that. Your News Feed message contains a link to the Facebook Polling Place Locator through which you can find out where to drop your ballot.

Farmville who? Be prepared to see your Wall plastered instead with “I Voted” tags today. Once you drop the ballot in the box, you can slap on your own virtual “I Voted” sticker by clicking on an “I Voted” button to display your voting status on your Wall.

Your voting status will also appear in your friends’ News Feeds and you’ll be able to see the names, faces and total number of your friends who clicked the “I Voted” button. All the better means to get-out-the-vote among your politically like-minded friends.

And if, as we reported earlier, Facebook can be looked to as a judge of how the electorate will turn, campaigns, political junkies and prognosticators alike will want to keep a close eye on the real-time counter of “I Voted” button clicks.

We’ll be watching to see if 2010 can surpass the 5.4 million clicks the “I Voted” button received in 2008, and how that number compares with actual voter turnout.

Speaking of turnout, once the returns start rolling in, Facebook and ABC News will host a live town hall from Arizona State University. Beginning at 7 p.m., EDT, you can watch it here, here and here. We’ll be watching to see what panelist Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, has to say.

Alas, it seems the only thing Facebook left off is who, exactly, you should vote for.
