iPod fans have a gazillion options these days for speaker docks, but iLuv is trying something different: integrating one into a standalone DVD player.
That sounds counter intuitive at first, since an iPod is anything but anchored to someone’s home entertainment system. But this $149.99 dock, aside from having a nice design, also lets you watch videos and listen to 5.1-encoded audio (including music) on your home stereo/TV setup from the iPod as well as from the dock’s DVD tray—without connecting any additional cables or using up inputs on your stereo receiver, according to Engadget.
So in a sense, it’s a lower-tech but ultimately more useful device than, say, the Apple TV—which is restricted to mostly playing media you’ve purchased from the iTunes Store.
