Today Perion, the developer of desktop email client IncrediMail, has launched a new application for iPad users that turns traditional emailing on its head, reimagining the experience for tablet.
In a recent survey, Perion found that today’s consumers prefer the iPad for reading and writing email, but that iPad users were not as pleased as they could be with their current email choices. The new iPad email client sets out to solve this problem.
Perion CEO, Josef Mandelbaum, says, “We love email and believe it is, and will remain, a vital form of communication for years to come. But the new Incredimail is more than that. It is both a unified messaging application, including a photo inbox, as well as a bold new step in recreating the experience as needed for a multi-screen world, especially for newer mobile formats that have seen explosive growth.”
Incredimail for the iPad, which hit the app store this morning, features a redesigned inbox that turns browsing email into less of a list and more of a “magazine-by-touch” format, reminiscent of news aggregator applications like Flipboard.
As you can see from the image below, each email is contained in its own cell, or “Snippet,” complete with text, image and link previews. You can click to open the email in a new window, or just scroll through to read the email right within the snippet—a feature the company is referring to as “Quick Peeks.” You can also mark as read, respond, forward, delete or star emails directly from the preview snippet.
In addition to the iPad-optimized browsing feature, Incredimail for the iPad also features a unified inbox that allows you to add as many email accounts as you’d like to view (Gmail, Yahoo!, AOL, and any other IMAP account), as well as a Photo Inbox that imports all of your Facebook friends’ photos and lets you easily browse, like, save or add them to emails. A spokesperson for Perion tells me that, in the future, “we are definitely going to enable more Facebook functionality directly from one’s email environment.”
Incredimail also features a built-in web browser for an uninterrupted email experience and, on the visual side, email stationary that lets you add your own personal style to the emails you send.
Mandelbaum says, ‘We think users, especially our users, are going to love Incredimail for the iPad. It changes the whole way someone experiences email on the iPad. We look forward to extending this quality experience to the iPhone, Android and other devices later this year and eventually even bring this exciting new email to the desktop.”
Perion was nice enough to send me an iPad with Incredimail preloaded so I could take their new email experience for a test drive. Incredimail for the iPad definitely makes it a lot easier and more enjoyable to browse through your emails than the traditional experience of sifting through text-heavy lists of senders and subject lines.
It’s definitely not going to replace my laptop for work-related emailing, but I don’t think that’s the point. The app strikes me more as something of a “leanback” emailing experience, perfect for browsing through your emails while you watch TV, in the same way as you scroll through content on Facebook, Twitter, and Flipboard while you’re multi-tasking or have a spare minute or two to check-in with your online life.
Pick it up in the app store to try it out for yourself and let us know what you think! You can also check out the app in action in the video below.
