10 Memorable iPhone Hoaxes, Tricks & Hacks [Video]

Yesterday was the 4th birthday of the iPhone and to celebrate we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the most memorable iPhone tricks, hoaxes and hacks that have hit YouTube over the past four years.  We’ve got everything from this year’s popular Times Square hack to a fake marriage proposal, some iPhone magic and lots and lots of popcorn.  Check them all out below.

How to hack video screens on times square

Earlier this year, a video of a guy hacking video screens in Times Square using his iPhone went viral.  Turns out the video was a hoax, created by viral marketing agency Thinkmodo to promote the film Limitless.  The original video has been viewed over 3.2 million times so far.  I had the opportunity to talk to Michael Krivicka of Thinkmodo about the world of viral hoaxes.  Click here to find out what he had to say.

iPhone Magic

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned magic show.  In this video, which has over 9 million views, magician Marco Tempest shows off some fun magic tricks on the iPhone.  Tempest recently released an awesome iPod magic show about deception, which you can click here to watch.

NUDE IT app for iPhone (see people naked)

Here’s another fun hoax from Michael Krivicka of Thinkmodo.  It’s an app that lets you see people naked…wahoo!  Can you imagine if the Nude It app was real?

News anchor licks iPad on Live TV

This awesome April Fools clip hit YouTube earlier this year.  It features an iPhone app that allows you to actually smell and taste foods.  One news anchor gets the chance to try it out.  Priceless.

Table Connect for iPhone

This is one of our favorite iPhone hacks.  Created by three developers in Austria, Table Connect for iPhone is a giant touch-screen table that you can plug your iPhone into and control it from a much, much bigger screen.  Imagine playing Angry Birds on this baby!

And here’s a demo of Labyrinth 2 being played on Table Connect for iPhone.  Amazing!

Frank’s Marriage Proposal in Central Park

Thinkmodo is certainly fond of iPhone hoaxes.  Here’s another one they put together—Frank’s Marriage Proposal in Central Park.  We covered this video last year in a collection of 5 Fake Viral Video Campaigns.  It features an elaborate wedding proposal that was captured on iPhones.  Did this hoax seem like the real deal to you?

Popcorn!

iPhone Popcorn Trick

One of the most popular original iPhone “magic trick” apps was the iMunchies popcorn app.  This video showcasing the app has over 2.9 million views.

iPhone App makes popcorn!

Speaking of popcorn, YouTuber Daneboe made a fantastic parody of an app that actually pops popcorn on the iPhone.  The app looks like a burner and when you put kernels on it, it makes freshly popped popcorn.  Delicious!

iPhone – popcorn reflects radiation

And finally, here’s one last popcorn video.  You may remember the crazy viral hoax of four cell phones popping popcorn.  This video turns that popcorn video on its head.  Instead of surrounding popcorn kernels with cell  phones, these guys surround an iPhone with popcorn to find out what happens.  The results are…well…explosive!
