Is LinkedIn’s Mobile Web Site Good Enough to Let You Toss Its App Out?

Frank McPherson covered the LinkedIn app updates for Android and iPhone earlier this week. The major overhaul of the apps’ user interfaces (UI) has resulted in what some people think is a much more appearling LinkedIn mobile UI.

VentureBeat’s Jolie O’Dell spoke with LinkedIn’s lead mobile developer to learn about the underlying software changes. Of particular interest to me was this statement: The reuse of HTML5 code across all three applications (mobile web, iOS and Android) will speed up iterations of the app, too. HTML5 web markup language is used in LinkedIn’s mobile apps. This is something we already see in Google’s ChromeBook and will see as Microsoft rolls out Windows 8.

It got me wondering about the mobile web site update Frank mentioned in his blog entry. So, I took a look at it to see if I could the mobile web view was “good enough” to let me do without LinkedIn’s mobile app altogether.

The first thing to note is that pointing a mobile browser at “linkedin.com” results in viewing the desktop version of the web page on a tiny display. The site does not detect and redirect mobile browsers to the appropriate mobile friendly site. Frank noted that “touch.linkedin.com” takes you to the new mobile site. However, “m.linkedin.com” redirects to touch.linkedin.com saving a couple of key taps on a tiny mobile screen. I found LinkedIn’s mobile website to very easy to read and navigate. As an infrequent user of the site and its services, I would say there is no need for me to install any of the mobile apps. Linkedin’s mobile website is “good enough.”
