Is Steam Planning to Release Non Gaming Apps?

Steam is a gaming app store for PC that allows you to download games from one of the biggest libraries on the web. The service started in 2003, and after a series of updates is now as smooth as the Apple App Store and allows users to easily download a game with a few clicks. A tip to The Verge about Steam’s new Android app and the various categories available hints that Steam may have intentions to get into more than just games at some point.

The Android app has categories that include Accounting, Animation, Design, Education, Photo Editing and more. Definitely reminiscent of a fully fledged Apple Store rather than Steam’s gaming focused app store. If Steam were to jump into this area, it may be a great move to pair with the new Microsoft Surface Tablet PCs. By making a whole range of apps available to users who are using that new Microsoft PC, it would give that device the apps it needs to compete with Apple at launch.

Of course, we’re not sure entirely what the plan is at this point, but we’ll see how Steam moves forward.
