By early 2009 there is a good chance you will stroll into your local Best Buy and be able to buy a Mac. The electronics retailer is planning to double the number of stores that sell Apple computers. While all of the chain’s stores sell iPods, Apple computers are currently available at only 250 out of 900 stores. The logic behind the move is simple: Apple is hot, even as the economy cools. And this was before a flurry of CES announcements that should further jog consumer interest, including a new Mac Pro that comes standard with 8-cores using Intel’s new Penryn “Harpertown” chips. The Mac Pro also boasts:
- Two 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with dual-independent 1600 MHz front side buses
- 2GB of 800 MHz DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMM memory, expandable up to 32GB
- 320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive running at 7200 rpm
- 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Vista continues to stumble out of the gate and Bill Gates, who might have a career as an actor, recently announced that there’s no plans for an iPhone competitor.
“In the so-called smartphone business we will concentrate solely on software with our Windows Mobile program,” said Gates.
Meanwhile, Apple continues to please, just announcing that they will be leveling iTunes download prices across Europe. Next up, lookout Netflix! They’ve even please woman around the globe by announcing the first female member to their board.
You go, Apple!
