Jodie Foster Finally Comes Out, Lighting Up Social Media

Jodie Foster accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes last night, and took the opportunity to make a longish impromptu speech in which she said she had long ago come out to family and friends and offered a shout-out to her ex-partner Cydney Bernard. Commentators quickly dubbed the speech mystifying and rambling. But a few called it emotionally nuanced and even “genius.”

Overnight, I came to a slightly different conclusion. Despite long-standing, persistent rumors that Foster is a lesbian, I think she was genuinely nervous about coming out, causing her to add seemingly disconnected remarks about privacy in Hollywood, her single status and the normal, even boring, family life she led with Bernard. Her suggestion that she may never be on a stage again seemed to reflect her fear, not to promise retirement.
