Note to PR types: If you write a scary looking email subject line like this, I may force myself to read it: Update Facebook While Driving” Yes, OnStar is introducing what may potentionally be a new source of distracted driving. Here’s the rest of the press release:

“OnStar is: unveiling a new social media interactive program for the car.” The OnStar Facebook application will enable drivers to verbally dictate a message to update their status. With only a push of a button, the service will also allow subscribers to listen to their most recent news feeds. Other new technologies will include voice-based texting, which allows customers to send and receive texts using Bluetooth.

After reading this, I sought out other commentary on the topic and found this item on Automoblog that sums it up nicely:

Update Facebook While Driving…What!?

OnStar’s Facebook App will probably be a big hit with those addicted to Facebook who subscribe have OnStar and its service in their automobiles. As for the rest of us? I just hope those distracted drivers don’t hit us!
