Kenneth Cole Has Social Media Issues

Kenneth Cole must be tired of fashion, because he’s using social media to spark political debates about war, gay rights, guns and abortion.

His new campaign called, “What Do You Stand For” at Wheredoyoustand.com asks you to chime in on intense discussions on an aggregated and interactive social media page. The page is filled with Facebook and Twitter feeds and of course, videos of hot models. Yes, watching sexy black and white videos of gorgeous women making out with each other can influence you on gay marriage. Or does the social media campaign just want to make you want to buy bags?

Cole says, “Over the past 30 years, I’ve strived to make what I do as meaningful as I can to connect with individuals. I’ve used my brand platform to raise awareness about important social issues and to remind people that it’s not just what they look like on the inside but who they are on the inside — And not just what they stand in but what they stand for.”

Sounds convincing to me, but not surprisingly, he’s getting hammered by critics saying he’s sticking his skirts on the wrong bodies.

Eric Scheidler, the executive director of the Pro Life Action League, told FoxNews.com, “It so trivializes the issue. I think it would be offensive to anyone on either side of the abortion issue.”

Let’s also not forget that Cole is no stranger to inappropriate status updates. His message about Egypt offended the masses and was considered the tackiest marketing tweet ever. He posted:

Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo -KC

Maybe Cole is out of line by bridging the gap between fashion and politics; and stirring up debate and uprise ala social media. Though some fashionistas think Cole is thinking out of the bag in order to boost sales during a rough market. Whatever it might be, Cole is walking down a new social media runway, and turning a few heads along the way.
