Kickstarter Adds a Stats Page

Every day, Kickstarter runs thousands of miniature fundraisers for creative projects. Some will earn enough money from donors to go into production, while others quietly disappear when the time runs out.  Every so often an artist will come along who strikes fundraising gold, raising hundreds of thousands – or even millions – of dollars for a gadget or a film. On Thursday, Kickstarter added a Stats Page: a running tally of what’s happening all over the community in one glance. If the next million-dollar project is out there, you’ll find it here.

The page begins with an overview of which projects are currently raising money, and which ones have succeeded and failed. From there, you can take a look at the dollar amounts and success rates in different categories.

Right now, most of the projects that succeed raise between $1,000 and $10,000, although there are currently 158 that have raised over $100,000 and seven projects that have topped a million dollars. Considering that the tool is for the unfinished projects of regular people –not non-profits who are used to asking for donations, or for venture capitalists who will expect a return on their investments — this is an astonishing amount of cash.

It’s interesting to see which kinds of projects are most successful, but creators who don’t fit into these categories should’t be discouraged. The format favors strong visuals, so if you’re writing a novel or making the world’s biggest pie, just make sure your page has a good video.

As for the failed projects, most of them only raised between 1% and 20% of their goal before the donations were sent back to the backers and the projects were scrapped. The last-minute heartbreak of being just a few dollars short when the time runs out is pretty rare — although it would make a good premise for “Kickstarter: The Movie.”
