LinkedIn API Update Aims for Better Apps

LinkedIn has 175 million monthly active users, has just reported a glowing second fiscal quarter and has been accepted as one of the most evolutionary tools for the employment industry since Monster.com. The company’s stock has stood strong while social network cousins like Facebook and Zynga falter on the market. But instead of resting on its laurels, the company continues to improve its product, and the latest update may be the sign of a whole new stage of growth – the improved developer portal.

As an app developer myself, I can tell you that the new LinkedIn developer page and the features it offers me are far superior than any previous iteration. The site looks as friendly as any developer API page should be, and the code updates reach right across the entire base. This is a newer, leaner, more user friendly API, and it is going to encourage app developer to start developing apps for LinkedIn more seriously.

The new applications will allow applications to engage with the following four elements, and those provide a wide variety of possibilities for developers. From games that leverage a person’s friend list to apps that work with groups, this could be the beginning of a new era for LI.

  • Network Updates: Retrieve and post updates to LinkedIn
  • Connections: Read 1st and 2nd degree Connections
  • Group Discussions: Retrieve and post group discussions
  • Invitation and Messages: Send messages and invitations to connect

There’s a lot more in the update, including the details on the improved “Sign in with LinkedIn” feature which is now very similar to Facebook Connect. Read more about the LinkedIn app updates here and let us know whether it’s as big a deal as it seems.
