Twitter Trend: Live-tweeting Historical Events

Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 8.28.37 AMA relatively new trend on Twitter is to live tweet historical events as if they were happening in real-time. Have you followed any of these events?

Well, the latest live-tweet event, as reported by The Daily Dot, is President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston has been tweeting JFK’s “thousand days in office,” culminating today on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. The Twitter account @JFK_1963 will be recapping the events of Nov. 22, 1963, as they happened.

The account tweets excerpts from Kennedy’s speeches as well as links to primary-source documents.

This account is being written from an observer’s perspective, for the most part:

Though there are some tweets that are “from” JFK:

Previous live-tweet accounts took on the persona of someone involved – like the Titanic tweeting:

The tone and observations made by the person tweeting, presumably the ship’s Captain, Edward John Smith, demonstrate[d] a blend of historical fact, excitement, foreboding and a sense of dignified pride.

And then there was the reenactment of the Parliament Burning. The tweets sought to “reconstruct the gripping hour by hour story of the fire as it swept through the 800 year old buildings.”

Do you appreciate these historical recreations? They obviously take a lot of planning, so let’s hope so! And tune in to @JFK_1963 right now if you want to catch today’s event (or just reread it all later).
