Byliner, the online publisher that releases short fiction and non-fiction stories, has launched a new horror-themed short story in time for Halloween. Devotion: A Rat Story by Maile Meloy is available through Byliner’s subscription reading service (you can buy it a-la-carte for $1.99 from any of the eBook stores too).
The site publishes exclusive stories every week. A subscription to the service costs $9.99 a month, but right now they are running a promotion and you can pay $5.99 a month for a subscription. The app gives subscribers unlimited access to Byliner’s curated library of stories from well-known writers including Michael Pollan, David Sedaris and Taylor Branch. In January, the company began running Atwood’s original series Positron, for instance. Byliner’s stories are short enough to read on your coffee break, or your subway ride to work. “Think of us as dim sum for hungry minds,” the website boasts.
You can read Byliner stories on a computer, through a mobile browser on your phone and through their iPad app.
