Man's Facebook Funeral Page Unites 100 Wives and 200 Children

How do you get over 100 wives and nearly 200 children to attend an infamous polygamist’s funeral? The grandson of Acentus Akuku “Danger” hopes that his grandfather’s vast immediate family can be called to action to celebrate his life and mourn his death through Facebook. Danger – called so because of the dangerously good looks he presented to women – will be remembered on December 4th, presumably giving his relatives time to plan such a large funeral. As of today, the Facebook page organizing the funeral has over 2,500 likes.

According to ABC News, Akuku was in his late 90s when he passed away due to natural causes. Now, the family of this Kenyan polygamist is trying to arrange for a funeral that could expect to see upwards of a thousand guests, including his 100+ wives and almost 200 children.

The Akuku Danger Family Facebook page was started by Nickson Mwanzo, grandson of Akuku. He writes in the description of the page:

“IF YOU ARE AKUKU’S FAMILY PLIZ JOIN AND SAY MORE ABOUT YOURSELF. THIS IS TO BRING THE RELLATIVES TOGETHER. THANKS NICK”

There is a huge outpouring of love for the deceased in the comments. Wishes that he rest in peace, fond memories of his joking and promises to attend the funeral are found throughout the page.

Pictured above, Akuku sits with four of his wives and a child. This visual example of idyllic family life appears to hold pretty true to reality: according to ABC News, one of Akuku’s widows remembered him fondly to a local newspaper, saying that he provided for and treated all of his wives equally.

The respect and love that Akuku’s family feels for his memory will no doubt make the organization of the large funeral easier. The Facebook page has, however, helped to spread the word to those who were unaware of his passing – a not-uncommon situation even for grandchildren, in this case. Mwanzo, the page’s creator, says that it will be kept up as a memorial to his memory after the funeral.

Have you used Facebook to organize life events like a funeral?
