MapQuest Free iPhone Basic Voice Navigation App a Sales Pitch for the 99 Cent Version?

Before Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, and various versions of Microsoft’s web maps, there was MapQuest. It was, I believe, the first web based amp service I used. It was for many years (“many” relative to Internet time). I’m not sure who their target audience is these days with a wide variety of better known competitors available. They announced a new free iPhone app with what they call “basic voice guidance” this week called:

MapQuest 4 Mobile (iTunes App Store)

MapQuest 4 Mobile iPhone Debuts Basic Voice Guidance…And it’s Free!

Presumably, the 99 cent version provides more than “basic voice guidance”:

MapQuest Navigator (iTunes App Store)

I’m not planning to try either one, however. The “premium” 99 cent version has a 2-star average user rating while the free version is thought of slightly better with a 3-star rating. However, I also note it has a bimodal distribution with peaks at the 1-star and 5-star ratings. Very odd.
