With the increased capabilities of many mobile phones, such as support for video, music and higher-resolution photos, memory cards have seen a surge in sales from consumers looking to bump up their capacity for media content. ABI Research has released a report with findings that memory cards, such as those sold by SanDisk, will see “a 17% compound annual growth rate in shipments over the years to 2013.” The total market for cellphone accessories, which includes handsets and chargers, is $58 billion.

What makes the growth of memory cards so significant, according to ABI’s report, is that the cards have the highest profit margin of any of the mobile accessories. Over-production has left the market saturated, and the price-per-megabyte has dropped as much as 60% over the past year.

The information is part of a new study released by ABI called Mobile Phone Accessories, and is for sale via their website.
