July 7, when the memorial service for Michael Jackson was held, marked the second-largest day for live and on-demand video usage in CNN.com‘s history, as well as boosting the site to No. 1 for the day in unique visitors, total minutes and share of current-events and global news sites, according to Omniture.

CNN.com tallied 7.3 million unique visitors, 62 million total minutes, a 19% share of current-events and global news sites, 10.5 million live video streams globally and 9 million on-demand video streams July 7.

Coverage of Jackson’s memorial service set the tone for CNN.com to post a strong July, as it ranked No. 1 for the month in the news category in unique visitors with 38.7 million, in total minutes with 1.2 billion and in average time per person with 32.1 minutes.

And CNN’s user-generated news community, iReport.com, saw registered contributors rise 20% versus July 2008 and submissions go up 44%.
