Microsoft Steals The Old Spice 'Man Your Man Could Smell Like' Man

Millions of people around the globe recognize Isaiah Mustafa as Old Spice’s ‘Man Your Man Could Smell Like’, but it looks like Microsoft is trying to steal the Old Spice actor, and his whole shtick as well, for their Windows Phone 7 launch campaign in Australia.

“Well hello there, Australia!” Mustafa starts out his video announcement introducing the new Windows 7 campaign. His attitude is a little bit more than reminiscent of the Old Spice campaign. He’s got the same stance as in his previous role, he refers to himself as “the most talked-about man on the internet” and he even rips his shirt off.

The clip isn’t a direct rip-off of the Old Spice campaign. There’s no “Look at your phone, now back at mine, now back at your phone, now back at mine”-style banter. But the whole mood and feel of the clip is pretty darn close to Old Spice and it just seems a little bit contrived and confusing. I mean, I thought this guy was supposed to promote Old Spice – what’s he doing in an Microsoft commercial? I might even go so far as to say that the fact that Isaiah Mustafa seems to have “sold out” with his jump over to Old Spice makes me respect him and the Old Spice campaign just a little less.

I’m sure Microsoft is paying Mustafa a lot of money to do this campaign, but what’s their excuse? Hey Microsoft, couldn’t you come up with an original idea and a character of your own?
