Microsoft TechNet has a video and blog item describing what I assume is the officially approved way to installed Windows 7 from a USB flash thumbdrive…
Installing Win7 using a USB Stick
Microsoft’s Dennis Chung provides a simple 8-step process to build a bootable USB thumbdrive from which Windows 7 ca be installed:
1. Diskpart
2. List Disk
3. Select Disk 1 (Replace 1 with number reflecting your USB Drive)
4. clean
5. create partition primary
6. active
7. format fs=fat32 quick
8. assign
I ran into one problem even though all eight steps apparently proceeded normally: My USB thumbdrive wouldn’t boot on my Asus Eee PC 1000HA. I double and triple checked the BIOS settings to make sure it was set to boot from the thumb drive. I also tried all 3 of the 1000HA’s USB ports. So, what did I do? Stay tuned for the next blog item…
