Cord cutting has been at various times a pain for broadcast television and a boon. When they host streaming content, television networks are able to distribute their content to a wider audience, many of whom may not have cable, or even a TV. An infographic from Zappbox.co.uk demonstrates that more consumers are turning to streaming every year.
Online streaming is generating a lot of revenue compared to just a few years ago. In 2007, online streaming generated £21 million, but in 2012 that number jumped to £258. Tablet and smartphone ownership in the U.K. has also ballooned. Tablet ownership increased 13 percent in just one year, and smartphone ownership climbed 24 percent in two years.
Many mobile devices are used to stream content. Fifty-seven percent of tablet owners use their device to watch live TV every week. And by 2017, the number of smart TVs is expected to increase by 400 percent, compared to 2012.
Cord cutters with tablets and smart TVs are good for streaming services too. Consumer spending on streaming, downloads and subscription-based services increased 40 percent in 2013 — up to £621 million. And YouTube reaches more 18- to 34-year-olds than any cable network.
All this streaming is a boon for a social media. Thirty-nine percent of streamers use a second device to share their viewing experience on social, and 70 percent of viewers are multitasking on one or more other devices.
