mocospacePart of the reason why gaming is becoming ubiquitous is the increased penetration of smartphones with powerful processors and large screens that enable users to play social games through their mobile devices. Powerhouses like DeNA and others upstarts like PapayaMobile with a large user base are creating mobile gaming platforms to attract developers and release titles that get adopted by billions around the globe. The latest news comes from Boston-based start-up MocoSpace as it announced its upcoming launch of a mobile social gaming platform. As one of the largest mobile social networks around and should have no trouble attracting developers to its platform.

MocoSpace currently has 12 million members playing more than 1 million mobile games a month. Surprisingly, 30 percent of MocoSpace’s traffic is NOT on mobile phones and helps them rank number 10 among popular social networks on the web according to the ‘top 20 social networking websites’ report by Experian: Hitwise. MocoSpace plans on continuing expansion of its games portfolio with self-created titles and to open its platform to third party game developers. It’s unclear right now what kind of business terms MocoSpace will be offering.

“The mobile web has yet to deliver on the quality of mobile gaming that is standard for rich media smartphone apps,’ said MocoSpace CEO Justin Siegel. “Our goal with MocoSpace Games is to bring the virality of Facebook games to the mobile web. The mobile web allows us to truly expand the potential of social gaming, with a browser-based smartphone platform that can bring a deeper game experience to the mass market.”

We recently covered the launch of an android app by MocoSpace which allows its users to communicate using Android-enabled devices. The company targeted Android due to its ease of use and rate of growth. This move also enabled MocoSpace to proliferate its advertising strategy by creating opportunities to hyper-target consumers. MocoSpace was launched in 2005 by founders Jamie Hall and Justin Siegel and raised investments from General Catalyst Partners in 2007. They have offices in Boston and Herzliya, Israel.
