iPhone OS 3.0 to feature voice control and feedback

Note that “voice control” does not mean speech recognization. Voice control is a simpler technology that lets provides the ability for a computer to understand a limited set of commands associated with specific function (e.g., “launch email”). The speech synthesis feature also appears to be limited with to the kind of speech synthesis we see in the 4th generation nano.

It would be interesting, however, if Apple can squeeze a good text-to-sppech (TTS) system in the iPhone. This might allow ebook reader apps like Stanza and Kindle for iPhone to read ebooks.
