Hi ThinkMobile readers - all the great mobile apps, devices and reviews are now a part of mediabistro's SocialTimes.com. Thanks for reading!

The New York Times just posted a story about Google’s recent push to deliver ads on cell phones.

“Google wants to extend its dominance of online advertising to the mobile Internet, a small market today, but one that is expected to grow rapidly,” according to the report. “It hopes to persuade wireless carriers and mobile phone makers to offer phones based on its software, according to people briefed on the project. The cost of those phones may be partly subsidized by advertising that appears on their screens.”

Everyone is wondering how the “GPhone,” or Google’s answer to the wireless market, will figure into this. At this point it’s all speculation about whether or not they plan to release a handset, or just an operating system for other manufacturers to use in their own phone designs, as indicated above.

“The iPhone was a milestone in terms of how people use a mobile device,” said Karsten Weide, an analyst with IDC, in the article. “The GPhone, if it does come out, will help Google with distribution for their online services.”
