How One Musician Found Success On YouTube After Being Rejected By Every Major Record Label

YouTube has become a major hub for discovering musical acts, from Justin Bieber to Carley Rae Jepsen and, most recently, Psy.  The latest episode of The Stylish’s ‘In Focus: YouTube Sensation’ series takes a look at one musician, violinist Lindsey Stirling, that catapulted to fame on YouTube after being rejected by America’s Got Talent and every major record label.

Lindsey Stirling is known for her unique style of violin playing, which includes a lot of dancing, fun costumes and scenic backdrops.  Her most popular video, Dubstep Violin, has racked up over 31 million views and her channel as a whole has got nearly 150 million views to its name—that’s more than many mainstream artists, including Taylor Swift.  Copies of her music are flying off the virtual shelves, she’s currently on her first tour, which is sold out everywhere, and she’s become a household name among the YouTube community.

However, things weren’t always this good for Lindsey.  In 2010 she was told by Piers Morgan on America’s Got Talent “you’re not good enough,” in what she calls “the most embarrassing moment of [her] life.”  Following the show, she sent audition tapes out to every possible place she could think of and “was told no, over and over and over again.”  That’s when she turned to YouTube and it’s been all uphill from there.

“YouTube means the world to me.  They’re the ones that made my dreams possible,” she says.  “Social media…it works!”

Check out Lindsey Stirling’s amazing story in the video below and let us know what you think.  How do you feel about the fact that YouTube has opened doors for artists that have been closed out by the rest of the music biz?  Who are some of your favorite musicians on YouTube?
