National Ice Cream Month Goes Social

July is National Ice Cream Month! Dessert pics are scrumptious, tempting, and calorie-free, giving ice cream brands plenty of possibilities for highly sharable social posts. So, let’s take a look at how top ice cream brands chose to celebrate this very important social holiday.

Ice cream lovers are passionate about their favorite treat. So why not see what their favorite flavor says about them? To celebrate National Ice Cream Day on July 21, Baskin-Robbins posted a yummy character analysis pic. The Facebook page asked “What does your favorite Baskin-Robbins flavor say about you?” And the pic included the beloved #BRFlavors hashtag.

That post received more than 1,200 comments , 7,100+ likes, and over 1,000 shares.

Their tweet on the same day kept the pic and modified the tweet to read: “Happy National Ice Cream Day! RT with your flavor using #BRFlavors pic.twitter.com/3bb5HTWYu2.” They received nearly 60 retweets, 27 favorites, and 3 comments.

Ben & Jerry’s has always been a very social brand. They have been doing Free Cone Day since 1979, and this summer’s big promo has been to ask fans to tweet the #OMGFreeBenJerry Scoop Truck with their location and a request for treats. The Scoop Truck has been traveling on both the East and West Coast, offering free Greek Yogurt scoops since April. (They are in Portland and New York right now.)

Ben & Jerry’s July 1st Facebook and Twitter posts read: “July is National Ice Cream Month! Celebrate with a cone, or 2, or 3, or 4, or…” along with a fun Earth-inspired pic of ice cream cones. 

Their Facebook post received more than 16,600 likes, 1,500+ shares, over 300 comments, while their tweet received 140 retweets, 88 favorites, and 3 comments.

Dairy Queen. Facebook: 6,268,383 likes; Twitter: 112,562 followers @DairyQueen

The Dairy Queen Facebook page posts lots of fun pics of people enjoying – or about to enjoy – their ice cream. Many of these pics have this in common: someone is holding their DQ Blizzard upside down to show the thickness.

One post of note had this description: “Nothing says summer like our ‪#‎SmoresBLIZZARD. Okay, except maybe sun and flip flops and swimming pools. But ALMOST nothing says ‪#‎summer like our S’mores BLIZZARD Treat, right?”

The post received almost 2,200 likes, 61 shares, and 40 comments.

The following tweet, which received more than 20 each retweets and favorites, is also representative of the fun tone and flavor of the DQ brand.

The Häagen-Dazs page uses their social networks to encourage their fans to share their love of ice cream, offering delicious pics with engaging calls to action.

This Facebook post – “There are so many fun ways to enjoy ice cream! What is your favorite way to eat ice cream?” – received more than 39,000 likes, 1,700+ shares, and 1,140 comments.

Häagen-Dazs also encourages their ice cream lovers to share their “favorite #HDMoment.” Their “moments” could end up on the HD Tumblr page.
