New Media Index: Patriot Act Accounts for Most Shared News Links via Both Blogs, Twitter

The House of Representatives vote on whether to extend the Patriot Act was the subject of the most news links shared via both blogs and Twitter during the week of Feb. 7-11, while the most-watched news and politics video on YouTube was the Feb. 7 edition of The Philip Defranco Show, according to the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index.

The Feb. 8 vote accounted for 17 percent of news links shared by bloggers, followed by: a column by The Washington Post sportswriter Sally Jenkins criticizing the lavishness of the Super Bowl in Dallas, at 14 percent; a Washington Post report that the U.S. unemployment rate fell to 9 percent in January from 9.4 percent in December, at 13 percent; and two stories tied at 9 percent — an item in the Los Angeles Times on how 24 state senators and representatives in Southern states have converted from Democrat to Republican since the midterm elections last November, and another Washington Post story about children who unknowingly ran up large bills using applications on the Apple iPad that are free to download initially, but charge once the app is launched.

The Patriot Act represented 21 percent of Tweeted news links, followed by: the revolution in Egypt, at 11 percent; an item in Wired about hackers’ group Anonymous, at 10 percent; a post on msnbc.com about a British woman who died after she allegedly flew to Philadelphia to get silicone injections into her buttocks, at 9 percent; and another msnbc.com contribution about the IRS making breast pumps and other lactation supplies tax-deductible, at 8 percent.

The Philip Defranco Show was followed on the list of most-viewed news and politics videos on YouTube by: a car running over 20 people in Cairo; Christina Aguilera fouling up the National Anthem before Super Bowl XLV; a since-removed video of an elderly woman fighting off a group of robbers with her handbag in England; and a protestor being shot and killed in Alexandria, Egypt.
