New Media Index: Twitter Users Focus on Small Businesses Using foursquare

The use of location-based mobile app foursquare by small businesses was the topic of the most news links shared via Twitter during the week of May 30-June 3, according to the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index, while the most-watched news and politics video on YouTube was footage of clashes between Catalan regional police and protesters in Barcelona’s Plaza Catalunya, and Sarah Palin’s “One Nation” bus tour was the topic of the most news links shared by bloggers.

Small businesses using foursquare checked in with 16 percent of Tweeted news links, followed by: global warming, at 11 percent; a warning from Oxfam, an international confederation of organizations fighting poverty, that food prices could rise by more than 120 percent in the next 20 years, due in part to global warming, at 9 percent; an inboxQ survey of Twitter users showing that 64 percent of them were more likely to make a purchase from a business that answered their questions on Twitter, also at 9 percent; and Germany’s plan to phase out all of its nuclear power plants by 2022, at 7 percent.

The conflicts in Barcelona were followed on the list of most-viewed news and politics videos on YouTube by: an animated Spanish-language cartoon explaining Spain’s housing bubble; President Barack Obama speaking over the British anthem during a dinner with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace May 25; a teacher trying to keep kindergarten children calm and safe during a May 27 shooting in La Estanzuela, Nuevo Leon, Mexico; and footage from Australia’s Channel 7 of a series of powerful waterspouts near the New South Wales coastline, taken from a helicopter.

Palin’s road trip accounted for 12 percent of news links shared by bloggers, followed by: a World Health Organization report that cellular phones are “possibly carcinogenic” and dangerous to humans, at 9 percent; the accidental release of a confidential memo sent to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, about an FBI probe into corruption at the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, also at 9 percent; the White House meeting on the debt ceiling, at 8 percent; and a proposal supported by Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to correct disparities in prison sentences between crack and powder cocaine offenders, at 7 percent.
