Bid Farewell To Newsweek’s Print Edition With A Look At Some Iconic Covers [Video]

By now you’ve probably heard the news that Newsweek will be ending their print edition at the end of the year.  After nearly 80 years, the company will be shelving their print edition in favor of digital and, to bid farewell to this iconic weekly news magazine we’re taking a look at some of the most iconic covers from over the years.

Tina Brown, editor-in-chief and founder of The Newsweek Daily Beast, and CEO Baba Shetty, explain in a post on The Daily Beast, “Newsweek Global, as the all-digital publication will be named, will be a single, worldwide edition targeted for a highly mobile, opinion-leading audience who want to learn about world events in a sophisticated context.  Newsweek Global will be supported by paid subscription and will be available through e-readers both for tablet and the Web, with select content available on The Daily Beast.”

Shetty and Brown write that, “Currently, 39 percent of Americans say they get their news from an online source, according to a Pew Research Center study released last month.  In our judgment, we have reached a tipping point at which we can most efficiently and effectively reach our readers in all-digital format.  This was not the case just two years ago.  It will increasingly be the case n the years ahead.”

Earlier this month, mediabistro’s “Cubes” series visited the Newsweek and Daily Beast offices in the IAC building in NYC.  As part of the very sweet office tour, Newsweek Daily Beast columnist John Avlon reveals the Newsweek Magazine Wall—a wall featuring some of the most iconic recent Newsweek covers, including some of Avlon’s favorites—the Mad Men cover, Muslim Rage, the Democrat’s Reagan and Michelle Bachmann Crazy Eyes.
