Now You Can Be Intentional About Meeting Strange People in Airport Bars

Who among us hasn’t be surrounded by the grey speckled walls of an airport, with a four or five hour delay, wishing for a friend? Not a regular friend, but just someone you can meet and chat with during your layover right now? There isn’t an app for that, but there is MeetAtTheAirport.com.

What may initially sound like a mediocre idea for meeting people, turns into a disastrous reality before you’ve even signed up for an account. “Share a drink with an attractive stranger in the totally safe environment of a public airport.” The only statement I’ve ever heard that inspired less trust was, “Hey, I’ve got some free candy in my van.”

According to Vice contributor Harry Cheadle, the site’s traffic is up 625 percent because of the travel and delays of the holiday season. A few months ago site owner Steve Pasternack offered the prestigious position of site spokesperson to Edward Snowden. I suppose he thought Snowden would be the most experienced candidate, having spent a month in Moscow airport, while seeking political asylum.

The site interface is fairly minimal and looks much like something designed over a decade ago. There’s also no “about me” section — instead, there’s a checklist. But hey, it’s still free.

It’s not always easy to meet new people, especially in a rushed stressful environment like an airport. Pasternack’s goal may be noble, but let’s face it, they probably aren’t. It’s also unlikely the site will be gaining any ground against existing social networks or dating sites. “The fun doesn’t begin when the airplane arrives at its destination, the fun begins when you arrive at the airport.”

Maybe just bring a book.
