NYC Launches App to Educate Teens About Sex & Give Access to Health Services

In a move to help teens find birth control, STD testing services, and other health services, the New York City health department has released a new app called Teens in NYC Protection+.

The app, which is available for iOS and Android, helps users search for clinics in New York City that provide sexual health services for teens. It also educates teens on what kinds of services they should expect to receive at these clinics and facts about their rights. For example, teens in NY state have the right to sexual health services without having to get their parents’ or partner’s permission. The app also includes reviews of the clinics as written by secret shopper teens.

The app also features videos of teen actors in situations that other teens might be in. NYC Health Commissioner Thomas Farley told The Daily News: “Many teens are simply not comfortable talking about sex with their patents…With this app, we’re speaking their language.”
