NYTimes.com and New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute will team up to create The Local East Village, a hyper-local news and information site serving the neighborhood where much of NYU is located.
The Local East Village is set to debut this fall, with former New York Times reporter Richard G. Jones serving as its editor and working with students, faculty, and community members.
Jones will also manage The Hyperlocal Newsroom with NYU Professors Yvonne Latty and Darragh Worland. The Hyperlocal Newsroom is described as a course that allows students to report and write for The Local East Village.
The New York Times deputy metropolitan editor Mary Ann Giordano will also coordinate with the university on editorial content for The Local East Village.
The New York Times editor of digital initiatives Jim Schachter said:
We want to continue to expand our network of collaborations, in the New York area and across the country, through associations with individuals, companies, and institutions that share our values — foremost, increasing the volume and scope of quality journalism about issues that matter. We think that the journalism program at NYU is the perfect match for this initiative.
And Carter Journalism Institute director Brooke Kroeger added:
This collaboration with The New York Times emphasizes our commitment to the highest journalistic standards in providing an innovative model source of news and information about and for our East Village neighborhood. We intend to bring the Institute’s many direct and indirect gifts to the project.
