The World Watched 231 Million Olympic Streams On YouTube

The 2012 Olympics may be over, but the Olympic stats are still rolling in.  This afternoon, YouTube has released statistics showing how the Olympic games played out on YouTube.

The YouTube Team reports that, “When we started preparing for the Olympics last year, we prioritized two things: giving you a front-row experience, and serving you video at the best quality possible.  You responded in a huge way.”

YouTube accounted for a whopping 231 million streams over the course of the London Olympics.  Here’s the breakdown:

  • Viewers in the US and 64 countries in Africa and Asia watched 231 million total streams.  72 million of these came from the IOC YouTube Channel.
  • NBCOlympics.com online coverage, which was powered by YouTube, delivered over 159 million total streams in the US.
  • The US Olympic Committee YouTube Channel racked up over 6.75 million views with their behind-the-scenes footage.
  • At peak, YouTube was delivering over half a million livestreams simultaneously.  The YouTube Team puts it in perspective: “That’s 5X the capacity of Wembly Stadium.”
  • Live video on YouTube saw a 7X improvement in quality.
