OverDrive WIN Will Turn Libraries into eBookstores

Have you ever been on a long waiting list for an eBook and then decided to buy the eBook instead? OverDrive plans to launch a new program to make that easier.

OverDrive is in Frankfurt this week for the Frankfurt Book Fair. That’s where they’ll be meeting with independent publishers and booksellers to share details about its new WIN Catalog. Win stands for Want It Now, and it’s part of OverDrive’s new push to expand the options open to libraries.

OverDrive WIN will enable OverDrive’s 15,000 partner libraries to help library patrons find the eBooks they might want to buy and then direct the patron to one of the eBookstores that stock the title.

“Public libraries offer for lending a small fraction of publishers’ eBook or audiobook catalogs,” said Erica Lazzaro, OverDrive Director of Publisher Relations.  “The WIN Catalog will take hundreds of thousands of early, midlist, and backlist eBook titles that are virtually invisible to library customers and present them for discovery.  WIN will also enable for patrons who do not want to wait for popular titles to become available the option to immediately shop for it from a list of booksellers that support their local library.”

What’s even better about the WIN Catalog is that it is intended to feature entire backlists from publishers, including the more than 90% of titles that libraries don’t have on the digital shelf. Libraries will also be able to act as affiliates for the the major eBookstores, which is itself a good thing in this time of budget cuts.
