Path Confirms Series B Funding From Redpoint, Richard Branson and Others (AllThingsD)
CEO Dave Morin noted the investors’ commitment to building Path “for the long term,” and said the funding would be used for “international growth and expansion as well as user adoption.” Inside Mobile Apps In February, Path revealed it has passed 2 million registered users, more than half of which had joined since the service relaunched in December as a personal journal app, pivoting from its original vision as a private photo-sharing service. GigaOM Ever since Facebook decided that Instagram was worth $1 billion, there has been recurring talk of Path, another social service being the next big buyout target. And while I am happy for the Path team, I find the comparisons with Instagram unfounded and premature. Business Insider Here’s what’s odd: RedPoint just invested in a startup that is in many ways very similar to Path: Caterina Fake’s new startup PinWheel.

Twitter to Expand Japan Sales Staff on Local Growth, CEO Says (Bloomberg)
The microblogging service will continue to invest and hire in Japan and will also add engineers, CEO Dick Costolo told reporters in Tokyo yesterday, without specifying investment amounts or the number of people being added. AllTwitter Twitter has had a close relationship with Japan since its early days. Japanese was the first language outside of English that Twitter was translated into, and Twitter’s first country manager was located in Japan. Twitter also chose Japan as the third country – after the US and the UK – to receive brand pages. And, Twitter has partnered with several Japanese companies, like Yahoo! Japan and Mixi, to raise its profile in the country. The Next Web Twitter’s growth in Japan has been like no other and it has become the first overseas social media site to find mainstream appeal there.

Foursquare Celebrates 20 Million Users, 2 Billion Check-ins with 2012 4sqDay Badge (SocialTimes)
At the end of February, Foursquare had 15 million registered users who had checked in 1.5 billion times at places like restaurants, museums, and parks. The company integrated with Facebook’s Timeline on March 16, which might have helped grow its user base and made the check-ins easier to share. The Verge Foursquare didn’t say whether those 20 million were active users or folks who had just signed up at some point in the service’s lifetime and may no longer even have the app. App Advice Since (for those of us who remember math class from school) four squared is 16, Foursquare has made a habit to celebrate on April 16.

Jean Carroll, a long-time advice columnist for Elle magazine and former Saturday Night Live writer, believes a person’s influence on the Web is just as important as a profile photo. AllThingsD Her matchmaking team has found that Klout scores are a “magic number” because people can’t make them up, Carroll wrote in a testimonial for the Klout blog.

Despite the connotations of its name, the network is not about loving American foreigners in Japan, but is rather all about Japanese delinquent youth, who are called “Yankees” in Japan. The network is a combination of a blog and social network, and has a MySpace-like layout, with large profile photos, customizable, flashy imagery and a whole lot of profile information in one place.

A hologram of the dead rapper, who died nearly 16 years ago, performed alongside Snoop Dogg during his headlining set at the music bash in Indio, Calif. Now a joke Twitter account has been set up for the hologram. Los Angeles Times Since Sunday night, the Twitter handle has provided a stream of tweets just as witty as a person posing as a hologram posing as a dead rapper could. “I could have sworn I died with a shirt on,” one of the less-profane riffs read late last night.
