PEJ: Bloggers, Facebook, Twitter Favor Israel in 1967 Borders Discussion

President Barack Obama’s address about the Middle East May 19, in which he suggested that Israel and Palestine revert to their 1967 borders, drew strong reaction on blogs, Twitter, and Facebook, most of it pro-Israel, according to a special edition of the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index for the week of May 16-20.

The PEJ examined about 48,000 blog posts and some 430,000 posts on Twitter or Facebook and found that 55 percent of the conversation on blogs favored Israel and opposed the suggestion of going back to the 1967 borders, while 27 percent was neutral, and 19 percent was pro-Palestinian.

The numbers were similar on Facebook and Twitter, at 60 percent pro-Israel and 20 percent apiece for Palestine and neutral.

PEJ said it used the following keywords in a Boolean search to narrow the universe to relevant posts: Israel OR Israeli OR Palestine OR Palestinian.
