People, 1B People Who Read People …

People magazine is a billionaire: People.com became the first magazine Web site to top 1 billion monthly page views in January.

The celebrity magazine also touted other new-media accomplishments, including nearly 1 million “likes” on Facebook, more than 3.9 million combined Twitter followers (@peoplemag, @StyleWatchMag, @PEOPLEPets, @CBBVips, and @peopleenespanol), more than 61,000 foursquare followers, 2.5 million monthly unique mobile visitors, and its iPad app.

People Digital editor Mark Golin said:

January? Best month ever. There are two big reasons why we were able to hit 1 billion page views. One, the People brand has a huge amount of resonance with a younger digital audience. Two, People has a tireless staff who works 24/7 to not only break stories, but to enhance them with photo specials, video, celebrity bios, additional functionality, and more. It’s why readers spend so much time on our site and return multiple times per day.

Fran Hauser, president of digital for Time Inc.’s Style & Entertainment Group, added:

Reaching 1 billion monthly page views is monumental, as it reinforces just how much people love our site. Equally important is the fact that we’ve been able to effectively monetize this increase in premium traffic. In 2010, People.com ad revenue represented 12 percent of overall People ad revenue, and in the first quarter of 2011, we expect to be at 14 percent. What’s perhaps even more notable is that at the same time, our print side continues to experience growth, proving that print and digital can grow alongside each other.
