Pinterest Blocked Amazon Servers Following Holiday Traffic Overload

Pinterest was forced to block Amazon and other sources submitting queries to their servers due to surging traffic and suspected malicious activity during Black Friday, according to Pinterest analytics service Pinfluencer.

The outage lasted from November 23rd at 11:30 p.m. PST to November 24th at 3:00 p.m. PST.

Although Pinfluencer operates independently of Pinterest, the tool is affected by what happens on the site. In an email to customers, the Pinfluencer team explained that the downtime briefly affected its ability to track Pinterest metrics such as the number of followers, pins, repins, likes, and comments for profiles, brand pages, and boards for customers.

The outage did not remove individual pins or affect promotions tracking. Overall, the issues were minor, the company said.

Wrote the Pinfluencer team, “This is sometimes the way things go in technology. Especially with something as wildly popular as Pinterest. Part of the tough reality of being on the cutting edge is that there’s hiccups and speedbumps.”

We’ve reached out to Pinterest for comment and will report back with the details.

Update: Pinterest gave VentureBeat the following statement:

During the holidays, we believe a third party was using Amazon Web Services to scrape our site so we temporarily blocked a specific traffic source, which is a common measure taken by web services. Some legitimate services may have been affected momentarily, but we do not believe that traffic to or from Amazon.com or other Amazon properties was impacted.
