Play: Google Promotes Nexus S With Addictive YouTube Game

Back in February, Google took to YouTube to promote Chrome with ‘Think Fast’, an interactive YouTube game.  They are following in the tradition of using YouTube interactivity for promotions with a brand new interactive game, designed to promote their new Nexus S smartphone.  The game, called Nexus Contraptions, is a puzzle game that invites YouTubers to see how quickly they can build their own Nexus S by “bouncing, bubbling, and blasting Google apps into the phone.”

The game, which is hosted at YouTube.com/NexusContraptions, is made up of a variety of levels.  The objective is to get “Google apps” from one side of the screen into a red funnel on the other side of the screen.  Different tools can be arranged to help you out, including rubber bands, fans, magnets and bubbles.  As levels progress, the puzzles get harder and harder.  Check out the screenshot below, in which the user needs to get the Gmail app past the two Nexus fans using a smaller set of fans and rubber bands.

I love this kind of promotion—I’ve got a bit of an obsession with interactive campaigns on YouTube—and I like the way that the game resembles games like Angry Birds that are popular on smartphones.  And I can certainly attest to the fact that Nexus Contraptions is freakin’ fun!  I’m not ashamed to admit and I just played for half an hour, before forcing myself to stop to get to work on this post.

From the game interface, players are invited to click a ‘Learn More’ button to find out about the tech specs and features of the Nexus S, and they can even purchase the phone from Amazon, Best Buy, Sprint and Wirefly by clicking a ‘Buy Now’ button.

While playing the game hasn’t convinced me to go out and buy a Nexus S, it did get me to check out the smartphone’s features and I think it’s a great way to spread the word about the phone.  What do you think?  And if you’ve played the game, how far did you make it?
